Voice command devices — activated with a "hot word" — became very popular, very fast.
One unexpected effect of their runaway success is that the name Alexa is now most associated with a popular digital product.
Result: The US Social Security Administration, reports that the number of babies named Alexa in the United States has dropped sharply:
- From 6,052 in 2015 (which is when Amazon's first smart speaker Echo became wildly popular), to just 574 in 2022.
- Alexa was the 32nd most popular name for newborn girls in 2015, but dropped to 536th in 2022.
Why it matters
It doesn't. Today's chart is trivial … Unless you are named Alexa and are tired of the same lame jokes again and again and again.
I've seen it happen and you have my sympathies.
Remember: Parabolic or exponential processes can go down as well as up. Although usually shown "going up and right", today we see that decline and downtrends can happen also parabolically.
